The 77th BAFTA Award 2024 Winners: Oppenheimer Scores big

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts BAFTA is an independent charity that has hosted one of the world’s leading award galas over the past 70 years, the annual award ceremony honours the very best work in film and television and supports the growth of creative talents in the United Kingdom and internationally.

The winners of the 77th EE BAFTA Awards were announced in a ceremony hosted by David Tennet on the evening of 18th February, at the Royal’s Festival Hall within London’s Southbank Centre.

The red carpet was graced by prominent personalities and distinguished guests all in attendance for Britain’s equivalent to the Oscars. Performance by Sophie Elis – Bextor livened the ambiance of the ceremony. 

The 77th BAFTA Award nominations were announced on 5th January, a total of 38 films were nominated. 

Oppenheimer scooped 7 wins at the ceremony the most for the night, poor things went big with 4 wins, The zone of interest with 3 wins, The holdover with 2 wins, Earth mama, Anatomy of a fall, 20 days in Mariupol, The boy and the Heron, American Fiction, Crab day and  Jellyfish and Lobster all had a win each.

Oppenheimer  is a 2023 biological thriller drawing inspiration from the 2005 biography “American Prometheus” ; it received positive reviews and praises for its cinematography and cast performances. The movie’s wins include:

  • Best director – Christopher Nolan
  • Best leading Actor – Cilian Murphy
  • Best Supporting Actor- Robert Downey Jr
  • Best Cinematography 
  • Best editing
  • Best Original Score 
  • Best Film

Poor things is a black comedy with its appealing visuals that delves deeply into the character of Bella played by Emma Stone. It won the awards for:

  • Best leading Actress – Emma Stone 
  • Best Costume design 
  • Best makeup and hair 
  • Best production design

The zone of interest is a polish historical drama based on the life of German Nazi commandant Rudolf Hoss. The movie went on to win:

  • Outstanding British Film
  • Best Sound
  • Best film not in the English language 

The holdovers is a 2023 American movie set in the 1970’s centred around a grumpy instructor at a New England prep school. Its wins include:

  • Best Supporting Actress – Da’vine Joy Randolph
  • Best casting 

Earth Mama won the outstanding debut by a British Writer, director or producer the recipients include Savanah Leaf(writer, director, producer), Shirley O Connor(producer) Medb Riordan(producer). 

20 days in Mariupol won the best documentary award. 

The Boy and the Heron won the best animated film

Anatomy of a fall won the Best Original Screenplay award. 

American Fiction won the Best adapted screenplay award. 

Crab Day won the Best British Short animation award. 

Jellyfish and Lobster won the Best British short film award. 

Mia McKenna Bruce was voted by the public as the EE Rising star award winner beating Jacob Elordi, Ayo Edebiri, Phoebe Dynevor and Sophia Wilde. 

June Giovanni was presented with the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award 

First time winners include Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy and Da’vine Joy Randolph. 

A heartiest Congratulations to this year’s BAFTA Award winners they impacted the 2023 British cinema with their impeccable performances and storytelling both on screen and off screen which earned them their highly deserved recognition.
