Notably in this year’s nomination is the presence of newcomers dominating the BAFTA Film Awards stage with 11 out of 23 performance category nominees earning their maiden BAFTA nods. From Sandra Hüller’s impactful roles in “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” to Cillian Murphy’s stellar performance in “Oppenheimer.” This year’s nomination list is a lineup brimming with fresh talent.

Also joining the spotlight is Jacob Elordi, this year’s EE Rising Star nominee, accompanied by six esteemed former EE Rising Stars, including Emily Blunt, Carey Mulligan, and Emma Stone, each leaving an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape since their debut.

The Best Director category takes a captivating turn with four out of six directors stepping into the limelight for the first time. Jonathan Glazer, Andrew Haigh, Alexander Payne, and Justine Triet promise an exhilarating competition, each vying for the coveted title, and none of them carrying the weight of a previous win.

Adding to the anticipation, the 2023-4 BAFTA Breakthrough cohort showcases its brilliance with three directors receiving nominations alongside Vivian Oparah. Raine Allen-Miller and Charlotte Regan shine in Outstanding British Film, while Ella Glendining captivates in Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

Get ready for a cinematic extravaganza like never before! In a speech by Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, on the 18th of January, she said : “The 38 films nominated by BAFTA voters today span an extraordinary range of genres and stories.  The field this year is incredibly strong. More films were entered, making the selection process particularly tough for our voting members.

The films and talented people nominated represent some of the most talked about films of the year, the most critically acclaimed, and films yet to be released and discovered by audiences. With a month to go until the EE BAFTAs on 18 February.

We encourage film fans everywhere to watch as many nominated films as possible and find out more about the people who make them by listening to our new official podcast, Countdown to the BAFTAs, which is available widely on podcast platforms from today.”
